Aromatherapy and Candle Magic

Aromatherapy and Candle Magic

Amy Madrid

Since childhood, I have always been called to the magical arts. The draw of Mother Nature, her moon, her ocean, her forest, and mountains have always sung out to me.  So needless to say the Great Mother and her magic have been a big part of my life for many years.  One of my favorite methods for spell casting or intention setting is candle magic. It can be as simple as you want or as complicated as you want.

Candle magic can be simple with just a lit candle and a prayer. Or it can be much more involved with the use of herbs, essential oils, alignment of the stars and the cycles of the moon etc. For instance, the full moon is a good time for spells pertaining to love, fertility, charging objects and manifesting desires. Whereas when the moon wanes it is a time for clearing negativity and removing things from your life that no longer serve you. A helpful reference I use is an app called Deluxe Moon. It tells me what phase the moon is in, what zodiac sign is at play and much more, making it a great reference for spell work.

For me personally, I love to anoint my candles with essential oils. I feel it adds a definite boost to any magic I am working with. To help understand this I want to share with you an excerpt from Magical Oils By Moonlight by Maya Heath she says, “ Science tells us that our sense of smell is the only one of our senses whose sensory messages do not go through the rational part of our brain. Instead, it connects directly with instinctive and unconscious behavior.” She also writes “by using specific scents we can intentionally address the body’s physical, mental and emotional responses. This practice is called aromatherapy. It is the study of how smell affects the body, mind, emotions, and spirit by using distilled extracts of plants flowers and herbs.” She goes on to say “because our sense of smell directly address our body’s chemistry and nervous responses we can use it to attune ourselves to the subtle vibrations of the unseen world.”  I could not of said this any better, for me her statements rang very true to my heart because it is our true emotion and intention that really puts our magical workings in motion. For me, aromatherapy is a great way to invoke this.

Recently I have been guided to start my own magical apothecary shop.  The desire and inspiration were so strong that I started researching the means to do so. In my research, I realize I needed more education on essential oils and creating my own unique blends. Since essentials oils can be costly I did not want to be wasteful by blindly blending oils. So I started to look into schools and realized my desire was adding up financially. However, the drive to achieve my dream was a so strong I decided spell work was needed to help me along. So on the full moon I grabbed my trusty old book (a book that I have literally had since my teens) Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham. From his extensive list of herbs, I choose the essential oils of cinnamon, high John the conqueror and patchouli. I choose these oils for their magical qualities cinnamon for success, high John for money and patchouli for prosperity. I used a green candle, the color green being associated with prosperity and money. I engrave the words success and financial prosperity on to the candle. I anointed my candle with my oil blend, wrote out my intention in a poetic incantation and stood under the full moon. With silver light shining down upon me I grounded myself and connected with the elements. I clearly held my intention in my mind and lit the candle. I petitioned the Goddess & God and chanted my incantation into the night. I released my desire into the vast universe and let my glowing candle burn its self out….

I’ll tell you what the very next day after the full moon I was guided in finding a school that was of good quality and at a much more affordable price, Heart of Herbs. A few days after that I was gifted some money enabling me to be able to purchase my supplies for the aromatherapy class I enrolled in. Now I was able to begin my new adventure. It truly is amazing how the universe works. It is when we listen to that inner voice, utilize the gifts of Mother Earth, connect with our heart, light a candle and breathe in deeply the many aromas of nature that magic comes alive and desires come into being….
