Cold and Flu Remedies In Your Kitchen

Cold and Flu Remedies In Your Kitchen. It’s that time of year again. You wake up with a runny nose and aches and pains and the chills from a fever. As soon as symptoms start, it’s time to act. Many cold and flu remedies are right in your kitchen. What to keep on hand:

  • Fresh Garlic: garlic is one of my favorite superfoods. It fights infection, reduces inflammation, and is great for your heart as well.
  • Lemons: a great detoxifier for your body, it also fights throat infections, builds your immune system, and helps fight respiratory infections.
  • Ginger root: ginger is great for nausea, indigestion, gas, and diarrhea. Ginger is also helpful in reducing joint pain.
  • Onions: fights bacteria and help alleviate symptoms of the common cold and respiratory illnesses.
  • Cayenne Pepper: helps sinus congestion and is a fever reducer.
  • Honey: raw honey is soothing and has anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: illnesses put the body in a more acidic state. Apple cider vinegar helps regulate the ph of the body and gives the immune system a boost.

Now that the kitchen is stocked, what do I do when I start feeling sick?

Cold and Flu

Garlic-Onion Syrup

Finely chop garlic and onion and pour honey over it. Leave it sit for 2-3 hours, then take 1 tsp every half hour at the onset of symptoms.

Hot Lemon Water with Cayenne

Juice a lemon and add the juice to a cup of hot water. Add a dash of cayenne and honey to taste. This is best taken first thing in the morning, but can be taken throughout the day as well.

Ginger Tea

Peel and slice a piece of raw ginger  root and place in a large glass or mug. Pour boiling water over it and let it steep for 10-15mins. This is a great beverage for nausea and upset stomach, as well as its warming effect can help get rid of the chills of a fever.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Taken regularly, this can help boost your immunity and prevent illness altogether. Take 2 Tablespoons in a glass of water, with honey to taste if needed; or add it to fruit or vegetable juice.

Dietary Tips For When You’re Sick

  • Reduce your intake of dairy. Dairy increases formation of mucus.
  • Take in as many fluids as possible. Eating soup or broth keeps you hydrated and warm, while not requiring a lot of energy to digest, giving your body more energy to fight infection.
  • Reduce your intake of meat, as this can create a more acidic environment in your body.
  • Take in whole grains which are easy to digest and are more alkaline for your body. Oatmeal, quinoa, and rice are all good.

As always, make sure to give your body plenty of rest. An Epsom salt bath can help ease the aches and pains. If symptoms worsen or do not improve in a couple of days, contact your physician.
