Herbal Cough Syrup
Herbal Cough Syrup. With any syrup, you need two essentials, a liquid, and a sugar.
You can use almost any liquid, like a strong decoction, these make the best medicinal syrups or a fruit/herbal juice, like elderberry.
Here is my well-loved Herbal Cough Syrup Two Recipe. You will find versions of this all over the herbal world and in our student’s medicine cabinets. It works and is fun to make. It is also easy to double and triple.
Cough Syrup Two
When preparing the cough syrups, the dried herbal mixtures are usually decocted. The mixture is then strained. Then the honey is added, and the mixture is allowed to simmer an additional 30 minutes. Add the flavoring after the mixture has cooled. (Wild Cherry concentrate is a great flavor addition).
Mix these dried herbs:
2 teaspoons thyme (thymus vulgaris)
1 teaspoon boneset (eupatorium perfoliatum)
1 teaspoon lobelia (lobelia inflata)
1 teaspoon elecampane root (inula helenium)
2 tablespoons sage (salvia officinalis)
2 teaspoons coltsfoot (tussilago farfara)
1 teaspoon slippery elm bark (ulmus rubra)
1 teaspoon wild cherry bark (prunus serotina)
1 tablespoon Balm of Gilead buds (populus candicans)
1 tablespoon mullein leaf (verbascum thapsus)
1 tablespoon peppermint (mentha piperita) or spearmint (mentha spicata) leaf.
Make as a decoction. Boil water, add the herbs, allow the mixture to simmer on low for about an hour. Make sure your heat is very low. If you can’t get it low enough and the herbal mixture is boiling away to fast, then cut the heat and allow to steep. Either way, allow the mixture to steep for an hour. Strain well. Add 1 pint of good quality local honey and simmer until a thick syrup-like consistency, about 30 minutes.
Bottle and place in the fridge.
