What You Will Be Able to Do as a Certified Aromatherapist

By the time you complete your certification, you will be able to:

  • Identify, source, and safely use over 40 essential oils by both common and Latin botanical name
  • Evaluate essential oil quality using GC/MS reports, distillation method, and supplier transparency
  • Understand essential oil chemistry — monoterpenes, esters, phenols, oxides, ketones, aldehydes — and what each chemical family means for safety and therapeutic action
  • Master distillation and extraction methods including steam distillation, hydrodistillation, cold expression, solvent extraction, supercritical CO₂, and enfleurage
  • Select and use carrier oils like jojoba, sweet almond, rosehip seed, fractionated coconut, calendula-infused oil, and more
  • Calculate safe dilutions for adults, children, elders, pregnancy, and acute versus chronic applications
  • Recognize contraindications including phototoxicity, sensitization, methyl salicylate cautions, 1,8-cineole pediatric concerns, and estrogen-sensitive considerations
  • Apply aromatherapy anatomy — the olfactory pathway to the limbic system, dermal absorption, and hepatic metabolism — to understand how essential oils actually work in the body
  • Formulate for real needs — skin and hair, emotional support, respiratory wellness, sleep, stress, first aid, and more
  • Practice ethically and professionally with strong client intake skills, scope of practice clarity, and a foundation for building a consulting business

This is the depth that separates a Certified Aromatherapist from someone who simply uses essential oils at home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aromatherapy Certification

Is this aromatherapy certification NAHA approved?

Yes. Our 250-hour Aromatherapy Certification is approved by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy and exceeds NAHA Level 1 educational requirements. Our herbal programs are also recognized by the American Herbalists Guild.

How long does it take to become a certified aromatherapist?

Most Heart of Herbs students complete the Aromatherapy Certification in six to twelve months while balancing work and family. The program is self-paced, so you can move faster or slower as life allows. There is no enrollment expiration.

Do I need a science or medical background to enroll?

No. The program teaches you essential oil chemistry, botany, and anatomy from the ground up. If you can read, study, and ask questions, you can succeed here.

What is the difference between this and the Clinical Aromatherapy Certification?

The 250-hour Aromatherapy Certification prepares you to work as a Certified Aromatherapist in consulting, retail, wellness, and small-practice settings, and meets NAHA Level 1 requirements. The Clinical Aromatherapy Certification is a separate, more advanced program for those formulating for complex health conditions or working alongside healthcare providers. You do not need to take this one before the clinical level.

Can I use this certification professionally?

Yes. Graduates work as aromatherapy consultants, product formulators, educators, and as part of integrative wellness practices. Many of our students own consulting businesses and product lines.

What kind of support do students receive?

Every student gets the same level of support regardless of program. You can reach me by phone, email, text, or through our active student group. We do not believe in leaving students to figure it out alone.

When can I enroll?

Anytime. There is no semester or cohort start date. Enroll today and you will be in the classroom within minutes.

What materials are included?

Your tuition includes 250+ hours of instruction, lectures, PDFs, printable references, recipe collections, dilution and safety charts, the full course glossary, and 24/7 classroom access. You will also receive coupons to Mountain Rose Herbs and Foster Farm Botanicals for sourcing your study oils.
