What is a Certified Herbalist?

A certified herbalist is an individual who has undergone formal training, education, and often certification in the field of herbalism. The educational institution offers certification.

Herbalism is the practice of using plants or plant-based substances for medicinal purposes, to promote health, and to prevent or alleviate various health conditions. Certified Herbalists work with clients to assist them achieving their wellness and health goals.

These professional herbalists typically deeply understand botany, plant identification, herbal preparations, and herbs’ therapeutic properties. Moreover they may also know about traditional herbal medicine systems. These systems are like, Western Herbalism, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or Ayurveda, and modern scientific research on herbal medicine.

To become certified, herbalists may complete formal education programs offered by herbal schools, universities, or alternative medicine institutions.

These programs may cover topics such as herbal materia medica (knowledge of herbs), pharmacology, formulation, and clinical herbalism (applying herbal remedies to specific health conditions).

Certification for herbalists can vary depending on the organization or institution providing the training. In addition,  some certifications may require passing exams, completing practical training or clinical hours, and adhering to a code of ethics or professional standards, as we do at Heart of Herbs Herbal School.

Additionally, continuing education may be required to maintain certification status and stay updated on advancements in the field.

Certified herbalists may work in various settings, including herbal clinics, wellness centers, natural health stores, or as independent practitioners offering consultations and herbal remedies to clients.  Moreover, they may also collaborate with other healthcare providers to integrate herbal medicine into comprehensive treatment plans for clients.

I got a lot out of this class. I really enjoyed learning more about herbs and feel much more knowledgeable in the area. I love helping people and herbalism is an amazing way to do that. One of the things I got out of these studies is to start teaching children about herbs in different co-ops in my community. They have really enjoyed it and so have I. Through this class, I have gained the knowledge and confidence to be able to do that.
